OPENING RECEPTION “The Little School of 400” at Houston Public Library’s Central Library | 1st Floor Gallery

EXHIBIT ON VIEW SEPTEMBER 19–OCTOBER 31, 2026: Houston Public Library presents “The Little School of 400” at its Central Library in the 1st Floor Gallery.
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, September 19, 2026 | 2–3 PM
The exhibition tells the story of an innovative 1950s preschool program that used conversation, play and 400 essential English words to prepare Spanish-speaking Mexican American children for school in segregated Texas. Featuring archival images and historical research, it traces how a program that began in a South Texas classroom grew into a statewide educational movement and helped lay the groundwork for bilingual education in Texas.
Organized by C 60 Inc. with exhibition curation and design by Gaselle Design and historical research support by David Contreras of LEAP (Latino Educational Archival Programs).
