OPENING RECEPTION “HuiPil: Cuerpo y Memoria” at Monterroso at Crimson

EXHIBIT ON VIEW OCTOBER 3–NOVEMBER 28, 2026: Monterroso at Crimson presents HuiPil: Cuerpo y Memoria, an exhibition celebrating the artistry of Indigenous Guatemalan women through traditional garments that preserve cultural identity, symbolism and knowledge passed down through generations. Now in its second year, the exhibition draws from a collection begun by gallery founder Gabriela Monterroso in Guatemala in 2001 and expanded over more than two decades, alongside new contemporary pieces.
More than garments, huipiles are works of art whose woven designs reflect the communities and places from which they originate. Birds and flowers evoke Santiago Atitlán, while mountains, animals, the sun and geometric patterns carry meaning across Guatemala’s highlands. The exhibition also explores how younger generations of weavers continue to reinterpret these traditions through new designs, materials and techniques, keeping this centuries-old art form alive and evolving.
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, October 10, 2026 | 6–8 PM
