ARTIST TALK + OPENING RECEPTION “David Farrer: Glass Menagerie” at Hooks-Epstein Galleries

October 10 @ 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Free

EXHIBIT ON VIEW OCTOBER 10–NOVEMBER 21, 2026: Hooks-Epstein Galleries presents David Farrer: Glass Menagerie, an exhibition of papier-mâché sculptures by the British artist.

ARTIST TALK: Saturday, October 10, 2026 | 4–5 PM
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, October 10, 2026 | 5–7 PM

Inspired by wildlife, travel and the landscapes of Africa and the English countryside, Farrer creates intricately constructed animals from repurposed paper, allowing fragments of printed text and imagery to remain visible across their surfaces. Reuse is central to his practice, as is a playful subversion of the traditional hunting trophy: rather than animals killed and mounted for display, Farrer’s creatures are fashioned from discarded materials and brought imaginatively to life.

Born in Leeds, England, Farrer studied fine art in Sunderland and The Hague, specializing in printmaking before graduating in 1990. His travels on safari in Africa became a major influence on his sculptural practice, providing extensive visual references for the animals that populate his work.

Farrer has exhibited internationally, with works acquired by private and corporate collections including Patek Philippe, Fortnum & Mason, novelist John le Carré and the late actress Carrie Fisher.
