OPENING RECEPTION + ART TALK “Material Dialogue: MaryAnn Lucas & Susan Oaks” at Lone Star College | University Park VPA Art Gallery

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2026 | 12:30–2 PM: MaryAnn has been studying and practicing art since the late 1960s. Born and raised in Chicago, she has lived in Houston since 1982. She currently belongs to and participates in the Watercolor Art Society of Houston, Visual Art Alliance, and Women’s Caucus for Art–winning various awards at each. She is past President of Visual Arts Alliance, Northwest Art League and “Lone Star Art Guild” which is an organization representing approximately 15 art groups located throughout Southeast Texas. For 12 years she was Guild Chairman of the Day Trips of the Pearl Fincher Art Museum in Spring, Texas – leading its members on monthly art excursions and also involved with the student art contest.
Susan Oaks has been a fiber artist and collagist in San Antonio for over fifty years. Her main project has been making fiber vessels in a Post-Minimalist style. To her, vessels are symbols for the enforced social roles of women, so she frequently deconstructs their shapes, showing them in the process of unraveling, spiraling out, thus, removing them from any possibility of function. Each piece becomes a metaphor for vessel, revealing its archetypal power while also showing it as social construction.
