Known internationally for creating fantastical characters and worlds across anime, illustration and gaming, Amano has also maintained an ambitious fine-art practice since the late 1990s. Big Bang offers Houston audiences an opportunity to experience this lesser-known side of his work on a dramatic scale.

Among the highlights is New York Nights II (1997), one of Amano’s earliest oil paintings—a surreal work stretching more than 50 feet that emerged from his time living and working in New York City. Throughout the exhibition, Amano’s distinctive visual language blends influences from anime with Western artistic movements ranging from Art Nouveau to Pop Art.
