Drawing inspiration from Houston’s distinctive art history, the exhibition channels the spirit of the Menil, curator Walter Hopps and the intimate, risk-taking collector culture that helped establish the city as a center for contemporary art. Rooted in Lisa Bates’ personal connection to that lineage growing up around Dominique de Menil’s home and her mother’s work with Hopps, the exhibition brings together a multigenerational group of Houston artists whose practices share a sense of instinct, independence and cultural conviction.
